About us
Temiz İçerik was created to explain the ingredients on the labels of cosmetics, food, household cleaning and pet products in language everyone can understand. This website is the free information guide that accompanies the mobile app of the same name.
Who are we?
Temiz İçerik is developed by HDSoft, an independent software studio based in Türkiye. The app is available on Android and iOS, and users have scanned thousands of labels with it so far.
We have no commercial ties to any brand or manufacturer, and we accept no payment from anyone for the assessments in this guide. The site is kept free through advertising revenue, and ads have no influence on our editorial decisions.
How do we score ingredients?
For each ingredient we give a risk range between 1 (lowest) and 10 (highest). We use a range rather than a single fixed score because the effect of the same ingredient varies with the amount, whether the product is rinsed off, whether it is swallowed and who is using it.
When setting the ranges, we follow this order:
- Official regulations: the EU Cosmetics Regulation (1223/2009) and its annexes, EU legislation on food additives, the EU CLP hazard classification and their Turkish equivalents. Banned or restricted ingredients are placed in a high band accordingly.
- Scientific assessment bodies: the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the World Health Organization's IARC and JECFA, and the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel.
- How the product is used: Is it rinsed off (shampoo) or left on the skin (cream)? Is it in a form that can be inhaled (spray), or is it taken by mouth? Depending on this, the same ingredient is assessed at the lower or upper end of its range.
- Sensitive groups: Pregnancy, babies, allergies and conditions such as asthma are noted separately; however, these notes are no substitute for personal medical advice.
How this relates to the app
The ranges in this guide are the same tables the Temiz İçerik app uses to score products. When the app scans a product, it assesses each ingredient individually against these criteria and calculates the product's overall score. A single high-risk ingredient carries more weight in the overall score, and ingredients at the top of the list (present in higher amounts) count for more than those at the end.
The product score in the app and the ingredient ranges on these pages are read in opposite directions: in a product score, 10 means the cleanest product, while in an ingredient range, 10 means the highest risk.
Our editorial principles
- We do not use alarmist language. We use words such as “toxic” or “carcinogenic” only when there is an official classification, and always with its context.
- At the end of every ingredient page we list the sources we relied on.
- When a new official assessment or regulation is published, we update the relevant pages and show the date of the update on the page.
- If you think you have spotted a mistake, write to us; we will look into it and correct it if necessary.
